Building a Grill Extender

I looked at the grill extender and I really did not like it. It fastened on to the lower grill and it did not seem like there was a lot of room on the lower grill with the grill extender on top.

So if I build my own grill extender what size grill would I need for a large Egg and how long do the bolts need to be.
