I had the same question and while I am not sure if this applies all the time but my observation is that if you are reading a post and click on the writer's handle the system will direct you to the email address. However, if you are in the forum directory (not reading an actual post but looking at the list of posts) and you click on a handle the system will direct you to the profile of the handle you just clicked.
