Is there a wat to grill oysters if they are not in the half-shell?
Date: 2007/12/13 22:47 By: Jpond Status: Visitor

I have a pint of freshly shucked oysters and wanted to try something new. I eat them raw all of time, but wanted to try something on the grill. Any suggestions?

Jpond,
You might try a shallow baking dish. I'm also think planking them might be the way to go? Maybe Alder or Cedar ? I've seen it done with scallops, Oyster might be good that way.

biscuit,

Thanks for the response. Unfortunately, I don't have the shells. I will definitely try your idea the next time I do.

Thanks!

Mike in Abita,

Thanks for the suggestion. I was wondering about using cupcake baking pans with butter or something in the bottom.

Jpond,
Cut some lemons and limes in half and clean out most of the pulp. You now have some flavored shells to roast them in. Go indirect but fairly high temp; you should be able to use the fruit rinds more than once, just add back some of the pulp you pulled out earlier to the new oysters. Enjoy!

Jpond,

That sounds like the way to go. Might not pick up too much smoke flavor as cups are a little deep. Perched on top of some fresh spinach might make for an upside down Bienville. A little garlic, bread crumb, butter mixture. Definetly hot sauce or ketchup/ horseradish.

I gotta go, I'm getting hungry.

Jpond,
Hangtown fry! Heat up a griddle, lay down a little beaten egg. When the just starts to set plop an oyster on it. (Use an egg ring if you have one.) Flip when the egg gets firm, i.e. when the edges of the oyster begin to get wavy.

Jpond,
I got 2 pints at Sam's (they were 2.99 a pint) I made Oyster Rockafella (sp?) with one pint. I grilled them in a cupcake pan, it wasn't real pretty but they sure tasted good. I deep fried the other pint.
Good Luck
