Hi everyone. I just got a large BGE last week and am loving it! Because I'm a newbie I am constantly checking the temperature gauge on my egg to make sure it isn't rising or falling. From reading this forum, I can tell that everyone loves their thermapen, so I'll probably end up getting one, but I was also wondering if you have any recommendations for a digital external thermometer/timer where I would just leave the probe in? Is this not the best way to do it? It seems easier than using an instant read thermometer, since I wouldn't have to open the dome to check the temp. Thanks!

Georgie,Depends upon what you're cookin'. If you've got something in the egg like a turkey, or a brisket, or a standing rib roast, or a pork butt that'll be in there for a while, a probe type thermometer with a remote is great to have. Instant reads, like the Thermapen are more for quick cooking meats like steaks, chops, tenderloin etc...where you want to get a quick read on whether or not the food is cooked to your liking. Perfect for steaks when cooking for a group and they all want different degrees of done-ness.Get both. They'll both get used.Cheers,John

Georgie, maverick industries et-73 is what i have, got it from amazon and seems to be what most of us use [until you get to the bbq guru stage]. you have to search amazon for a bit to find it though. also i recentley bought thermoworks 'original oven timer thermometer' it is on their home page. it does not monitor egg temp only meat, but is easier to use and the probes are cheaper. i have killed my maverick probes a few times. my advice is to buy an extra probe with what ever you get. but that might be just "me" i use the maverick for lo and slow where dome temp is crucial and the other one for turkey breast or beef roasts where the dome temp is 325-350. just went to amazon, to find et-73 there it is called "maverick redichek remote wireless smoker thermometer" bill

bill, Thanks for the tip - and the search terms for amazon! I actually just looked using those terms and all I could find is the et-72 and the et-7. The et-7 looks popular on amazon, is that the same as the et-73? Any additional guidance from anyone out there in eggland? Thanks!

Georgie, link should take you there, it is not easy to find. et-7 is not the same as et-73. et-7 has 2 meat probes and no cooker probe. good for two pieces of meat but not lo slo cook. hope this helps bill
